The Best Photoshoot Locations
Some places just feel different—where the air feels softer, the light lingers a little longer, and time seems to stretch in the most beautiful way. I’m endlessly inspired by the Australian landscape, especially Sydney’s Northern Beaches & North Shore, which I am lucky enough to call home. This naturally beautiful area influences my approach to photography, reminding me to embrace the quiet, authentic moments that make life so meaningful.
Beaches are my absolute favourite backdrop for maternity and family sessions because they allow movement, play, and softness. But I also love the wild stillness of open fields, where tall grass sways in the breeze and everything feels just a little more grounded. Then there are coastal trails, tucked between land and sea. Coastal trails offer the best of both worlds—leafy texture, rocky outlooks, and glimpses of the ocean. The light filters beautifully through the trees, and there’s always a quiet spot waiting to be found.
Below I have listed the places I return to with my camera, again and again—the quiet corners of our part of the world where families exhale, little feet go barefoot, and stories are told in golden light.
Long Reef Beach & Headland: This one has my heart. Long Reef is a landscape of contrast and raw beauty —open sea stretching endlessly, grassy dunes, golden sand, lush green headlands, and a soft lagoon tucked between. It’s a dream for family and maternity sessions, with space to roam, dunes to climb, and light that shifts in the most beautiful ways. Every corner holds its own kind of magic.
North Curl Curl Beach: North Curl Curl carries that effortless, barefoot energy I love. Families can simply play—wandering along the beach, chasing each other through the surf, or exploring rocky edges together. With everything from coastal bushland to sandstone cliffs, it’s full of character and variety.
North Head: North Head feels like a breath of fresh air. With sweeping ocean views, native bushland, and glimpses of the Sydney skyline in the distance, this spot balances wild beauty with quiet stillness. It’s perfect for sessions that feel intimate and grounded, while still holding a touch of awe.
Turimetta Beach is a quiet, lesser-known stretch of coastline with a raw, natural feel. The rocky shoreline, textured cliffs, and soft golden light make it a stunning spot for sessions that feel a little more intimate and earthy. It’s usually less crowded, which allows families to relax and connect without distractions. Ideal for sunrise, Turimetta has this peaceful, moody beauty that really shines in soft, early light.
Narrabeen Beach: Narrabeen Beach stretches out like a soft, open canvas. Its long golden shoreline, peppered with dunes and framed by sky, invites children to run and parents to sink into the moment. It’s relaxed, windswept, and full of space to simply be together.
Narrabeen Lakes: Tucked into the heart of nature, Narrabeen Lakes is gentle and rich with texture. There are shaded trails, tall grasses, and still water reflecting the sky. Whether nestled beneath the trees or lakeside with toes in the shallows, it’s a peaceful location for those who love the calm of nature and a bit of woodland charm.
Palm Beach: At the farthest tip of the Northern Beaches, Palm Beach is where coastal beauty stands out. Golden sands stretch beneath your feet, the sea sparkles in soft blues, and the iconic Barrenjoey Lighthouse stands gently in the distance. Whether you’re splashing barefoot at the shoreline, wandering rocky outcrops, or sharing a quiet moment beneath windswept trees, this location holds space for both play and quiet moments.
Dee Why Headland: With wide open skies and dunes that meet the sea, Dee Why’s headland is made for families who want a little wild woven into their story. The panoramic views create a stunning sense of scale. Let the wind move through your hair, the waves crash behind you, and the moment unfold with depth.
Shelly Beach: Tucked into a cove, Shelly Beach is calm, dreamy, and full of magic. The protected waters shimmer with soft light, and the surrounding bushland adds a touch of natural intimacy. Ideal for quiet beach walks, shell-collecting, or dipping tiny toes into the sea—it’s a space where time slows down and the ordinary becomes tender and unforgettable. It’s best to photoshoot here during the winter months as there are less crowds.
Wherever we wander—whether it’s windswept cliffs, quiet lagoons, or your favourite stretch of sand—what matters most is that is resonates with you and feels intimate and person.
